Having just turned a 100 years, The Meikles Hotel is undeniably one of Harare’s leading hotels and luxurious hotspot More importantly, it is one of Zimbabwe’s hospitality gems. It is a venue that is ideal for all sorts of occasions from fine dining to beautiful pool deck views and its rich history. Here is a rundown of some of my favourite Meikles features and activities.

1.The Pool Deck

When it is summer in Harare, nothing quite is as special or unique as the Meikles overlooking pool deck. Located on the 14th floor of the hotel, the stair case leads to probably one of the best views in the heart of the Harare CBD. The pool deck welcomes you with lovely white chairs surrounding the deep blue waters with an open roof and  side windows boasting iconic views of the Harare city centre particularly the city’s top sky scrapers mainly the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. The pool deck also includes a small bar to assist with quenching guests thirst while taking in the sun and waters. It is refreshing and such a special relaxing spot in our urban jungle.  The view is priceless during the jacaranda season as the purple leaves take over the streets. Do note that this  area is strictly for hotel guests.

2.   The Can Can Bar

My curious nature led me to discover what I coin, Meikles top “secret” , The Can Can bar. Located on the first floor  next to the up market, La Fontaine.  The vintage bar is warm, exclusive and a favourite  for an intimate gathering or special time with a loved one.  The leather chairs, wooden walls  and smartly dressed host add to the sophistication of this bar. The secluded Can-Can lounge/bar has the perfect ambiance to enjoy a drink alone or with friends. It is accessible to hotel residents and La Fontaine diners only but well worth the visit. The only thing missing is jazz to add to the ambiance… The Can-Can features a superb array of specialty whiskies, such as 20-year-old Benriach and 18-year-old Jameson Special Reserve.

3. La Fontaine

Fine dining at its best, what an exciting menu with quality tastes and aromas. The chef’s at the 5-star hotel are not just brilliant at their job but have a high level of skill matching international standards. The presentation of dishes, flavours and quality add this to my must dine restaurants in Zimbabwe’s capital. La fontaine is open to non-residents who can enjoy this up market establishment.  Meikles signature restaurant also overlooks the gardens and trees of Africa Unity Square. I personally loved their prawns which had an inviting display and garnish. The restaurant takes part of ZOL restaurant week which is the perfect time to enjoy their special menu for the week.

4. High Tea

The famous Meikles High Tea is one of the hotels most popular offerings and lives up to its reputation. Tea and treats on the ground floor is a lovely setting and grand entrance of the hotel lobby.  The Taganda Tea room is undeniably the hallmark of the Meikles tradition. Delicious cakes, pastries and beverages awaits you. The soft couches and carpet make it a lovely spot to enjoy a cuppa with friends or colleagues.

5.Meikles Club / The North Wing

The newly renovated North Wing and Club rooms are the definition of LUXURY TRAVEL, my oh my. Straight out the elevators, it is evident the North Wing is quite different from the South. Fresh, exclusive, stylish and most of all personalized.  The suites and modern African décor do not come cheap and rightfully so. The Club rooms also include stunning park views and VIP service ranging from a butler, the Club lounge and personalised check-ins.  From top celebrities to important dignitaries this is wing is one of the top quality hospitality offerings in Harare. The North Wing also includes the Presidential Suite, a suite I am yet to experience, one can only imagine the luxury, the style, the décor, oh the views…but hey a girl can dream right.
